Located deep in the heart of Texas, Belton is a unique city with friendly people and a rich history. Founded in 1850, Belton is located along the famous Chisholm Trail. Belton’s location also puts it squarely in the middle of natural wonders, shopping and entertainment.
Since 6000 BC Belton and Bell County have been the site of human habitation. Early inhabitants have been evidenced by burial mounds, and campsites (to name a few) from the late prehistoric era discovered in the Stillhouse Hollow and Belton Lake areas. Tonkawa are believed to be the earliest inhabitants. Traditionally the Tonkawa followed buffalo by foot. Belton was also home to the Comanche, Wacos, Nadaco, Kiowas and Lipan Apache. Skirmishes continued with the Comanches through the early 1870s, however due to settlements the majority of the other tribes were pushed out.
First settled 1850 and named Nolanville, Belton had taken the name of nearby Nolan Springs which were named for Texan explorer Philip Nolan. After being named the county seat of newly created Bell County ( named after Texas’ governor Peter Bell) in 1851 Nolanville’s name was changed to Belton.
Today, Belton offers many points of interest and education for residents and travelers alike. Festivals are held throughout the year in addition to all of the events offered at the EXPO Center. Bell County Museum is a great historical resource located in the Carnegie library building. There has also been a renaissance of small business to include restaurants, micro-breweries, and boutiques. If outdoor experiences are your desire there are two sizeable lakes and numerous parks offering trails for all levels of exploration and fitness. Another source of pride is The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and its vibrant college community.
