Few places in Texas are tied to the advent of rail as Temple in Bell County Texas. In fact, if it weren’t for the establishment of Temple Junction along the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway in 1881, the town wouldn’t exist. The area, now known as Temple, was quickly settled after the junction was established. Within 20 years, more than 7,000 people called the town home, including a group of Czech immigrants. Among the places to experience these aspects of Temple’s history includes: the Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum and the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. As of 2019, the city has a population of 78,439 according to a US census estimate, making it the second largest of Bell County’s three principal cities after Killeen.
The population of Temple continues to grow as it thrives in a complex economy, with both goods distribution and its reputation as a regional medical center leading the way. Baylor Scott & White Health is the largest employer in the area with about 12,000 employees, most located at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple. Two large, multinational companies house their headquarters in Temple, Wilsonart International and McLane Company, as well as parent McLane Group. In addition to some manufacturing, also a developing customer service/ call center industry exists. Temple is also home to the Temple Bottling Company, which produces Dr Pepper (with Imperial Cane sugar).
The City of Temple takes great pride in its pristine parks and top notch recreation facilities. With over 25 miles of walking, hiking and biking trails, playgrounds, dog parks, golf, and pools. Although there’s plenty to experience outdoors, Temple is not just a place for nature lovers. Those who seek the sweet sounds of a top-class symphony should check out the Temple Symphony Orchestra. If you’re more into the theater, attend a musical or a play performed by the Temple Civic Theatre.
